Cantoria Prepares to Launch the Largest Youth Center in Almanzora
CANTORIA.- The Municipality of Cantoria is finalizing the launch of the first comprehensive center for culture and leisure aimed at meeting all the needs of the town’s youth—a multidisciplinary space for which the youth area has promoted the foundation of the independent Cultural Association Cantoria Joven, initially headquartered at the Cantoria Cultural Center.
The association is set to become the heart of the new youth center located in the same building as the seniors’ center, boasting a separate 800 square meter floor with more than eight fully equipped spaces for various purposes, including kitchen services, cinema, coworking and study area, for musical teachings, yoga or dance. “It’s been tough and costly, but when we came to the Council eight years ago, we found a building where impossible works had begun, so much so that they were stopped. They were not fit for anything, and in the end, with a lot of patience and no less investment, we finished the first floor to bring together all the services aimed at the Active Participation Center, but the second floor will be young territory,” said Mayor Puri Sánchez, highlighting the initiative’s drive to blend thoughts between the young and the elderly, enriching both groups.
The initiative aims not only to provide Cantoria’s youth with public services that many cities lack for this demographic but also to start a school of values and civic attitudes, pillars that will mark the success of the new meeting point. “Consensus, solidarity, self-government, and everything they need to learn as citizens should not only come through books and training centers but through real and personal experience. In the new space, they will have everything necessary to meet even the most demanding expectations, and our only involvement will be to propose a collaborative management model with the Cultural Association Cantoria Joven from the youth area,” explains Puri Sánchez.
The rooms of the new center are ready for various uses, from spacious areas with floating floors for dance, yoga, and similar activities, to another completely dark room equipped for cinema. There’s a kitchen where they can prepare their meetings, study areas, and a shared computer room with equipment at their disposal. Along with these spaces, there is a soundproof room for musical teachings that will meet the high demand for courses, including guitar, as well as a large common leisure area where they can simply share space, resembling a large living room with different atmospheres, billiards, table football, etc.
The adaptation works have been extended over the last few years, as the investment required dividing the project development into several stages to undertake it with the municipal budget. “The youth center will start up shortly, and I truly believe that it will surprise us with its capacity to group and motivate young people,” trusts the mayor.
Cantoria already issues the European Youth Card and is in the process of becoming a Youth Municipality, a status that will open up even more possibilities for the youth collective, which will be accessible with the launch of the new youth center.
